Are you ready for the busiest time of the year? September is one of the best months online, in terms of purchasing. Ready for the holiday season? Changes you make to your site now just barely have enough time to get fully indexed by all the search engines before the seasons hit.

So take the most valuable sites you have, in terms of holiday buying, and give them your full focus. You might remind everyone in your industry of this fact, too, by sending them a little reminder...

...along with a note that you've linked to them from your resources page... and you'd greatly appreciate a link back! You just cannot take this activity seriously enough.

Reciprocal linking campaigns are the very best way to get that holiday traffic humming. I have one associate that bases his entire traffic plan on reciprocal links. And he doesn't even care about search engine traffic. He's had a site banned by Google before, and it only reduced his traffic by 10%.

Ten percent? That's crazy!

It's true. Most of his traffic comes from the links to his site themselves. He told me this after I warned him that something he was doing might get him banned... He replied "so what".

What a great place to be in! (I'm certainly not there!)

With many thousands of incoming links, he really doesn't depend on search engine traffic... but he does hold top-10 positions in a number of nice keyphrases as well. It would be hard not to with so much link popularity!

So whatever you do to get them, incoming links are really the best place to put your time and energy these days. Let's quickly review my favorite ways to get links:

1.
The best use of your linking time expenditure is to submit your site to the quality Internet Directories.

Here's the list:
  dmoz.org
  yahoo.com ($299 a year)
  goguides.org
  websavvy.cc
  gimpsy.com
  skaffe.com
  joeant.com
2.
Write articles in your area of expertise. I do this on an irregular basis, and it really does have a nice positive effect on my traffic and rankings. Submit them to republishing sites, but make sure to include a "resource box" at the bottom of them with your name, info, and of course that all-important link!
3.
Engage in a reciprocal linking campaign with other sites in your industry. You don't have to exchange links with your direct competitors, but you certainly can! It will help you both. The Internet is a place of limitless possibilities, and there really isn't competition in the same sense that there is offline... You literally can create your own demand!
4.
How about a recommendation campaign? Create a little 70 x 10 graphic that says, "recommended by yoururl.com" with a tiny logo... and of course a link back to you. Send a link to the little graphic along with a congratulatory note to sites you like. (They seriously need to be your honest recommendations!)
5.
Contribute in spiderable forums that allow a link in the signature. Private forums don't work for having your links count to the Google, just the open ones. So you SEO Club members are out of luck for this one!
6.
Start a blog! Mention your latest projects, the projects of your friends, and ask them to mention you in their blogs.
Is six enough?

Good. That should keep you busy until Christmas!
